Today it is my Dad’s birthday – 61 years young. Dad is a total legend. Now you may think I’m a little bias, but I reckon Dad knows just about everything there is to know. Everyone I know tells me that if they want on Who Wants to be a Millionare, they would use my Dad as their phone-a-friend. Dad is so clever that he even once came up with an equation for the amount of time required to cook the perfect sausage. Now that, is practical intelligence!
Dad is also the ultimate handyman – I’m yet to find anything that he can’t fix. I remember when I was just a kid, and my Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet tape was chewed up by my stereo. Quick to anger, I ripped the tape out and threw it at the wall, causing it to shatter. Most people would have thrown the bits in the bin, or left them for the hoover. But not my Dad – he saw it as a challenge. With some fancy sticky tape and wire work, Dad managed to get “Livin’ on a Prayer” singing out of my speakers again.
Dad also has a tool for every occasion. One time I needed a new phone socket put into my study. So Dad rocks up with this 6-foot long drill bit, and tells me that you need it for drilling down between the struts in the wall. Of course, I’d never considered this before, and after seeing this mammoth drill bit, one has to wonder where one may obtain one. (As it turns out, Dad inherited it from his Dad!)
Anyway – here’s to you, Dad. Happy, happy birthday!
