Finding an apartment was always high up on our list of things to do, but always something that we weren’t looking forward to. Our search started by enquiring about a sign posted in Craig’s building saying that there was an apartment for rent. The doormen told us that there were in fact 2 places to rent – a studio, and a 1 bedroom. Thinking the studio sounded more affordable, we went and had a look, but were disappointed to find it was a bit small, and the renovations that we felt it needed were not scheduled for the near future.
Figuring that we were a bit lost when dealing with the local market, Kristy arranged some appointments the next day with an agent to take us around to some places in our price range. It didn’t start well – we had to sign a form acknowledging that if we signed an apartment through them, we’d be up for a fee of $3,500 – $4,000 (depending on the value of the rent). We were even more disappointed to find out how many dumps were out there, and shocked at the exorbitant rent that people want to charge for them.

On our way home, we decided that we should take a look at the 2nd apartment for rent in Craig’s building – the 1 bedroom one. We were just amazed! It was so much bigger than the other dumps we had seen that night, and not that much more expensive. To put the icing on the cake, the bathroom, kitchen, flooring, and paint were being completely redone. Though the fee was a bit higher than we had hoped for, it was still cheaper than paying the agent’s fee.
Kristy spent a few hours the next day traipsing around in the rain looking for something that satisfied our style and budget requirements but concluded that we couldn’t go past the 1 bedroom that had impressed us so much – so we applied for it!
Within 3 hours, our application had been approved. We’re stoaked! We don’t get the keys until the 1st of February (that’s when the renovations will be finished), but the timing works out perfectly for us. Everything is falling into place!
For those of you that know our address at the moment, change the PHD to 2K, and you’ve got our new address. For those that don’t (and want it) – let me know and I’ll send it to you. We’re especially looking forward to everyone coming to visit now, and helping us to make our new apartment a real home!

That’s what you think buddy! We went furniture shopping today and based on the exorbitant prices of sofa beds it looks like you and Spesh will be fighting over the bath tub!
That’s great news that you have found a place that suits your needs and budget. And being so close to where you are staying now will be easy to move. Good stuff!
Are you negotiable on top ‘n’ tailing?
