A few of the lads got together to see Constantine post work this evening. I admit that I was sucked in by the preview because it looked dark and evil, and had Keanu Reeves playing a very Matrix-style character (can we all say “type cast”?).
The movie itself is about a dude named John Constantine (Reeves), who was revived after committing suicide. Still, he was technically dead for 10 minutes, and as Catholics term suicide a mortal sin, old mate Johnny is looking at an eternity in damnation. In order to win some favours with God and try and “assure his retirement”, John has devoted the rest of his days to exorcising demons. Anyway – the movie follows Constantine and a police detective (Rachel Weisz) in their adventures trying to solve the mysterious death of the detective’s twin sister… which of course involves, demons, a couple of trips to hell, and even Lucifer himself at the end.
Now, religious criticisms aside, this movie had all the makings of a good thriller but unfortunately it doesn’t quite get there. Though I wasn’t bored whilst watching, I certainly wasn’t thrilled either. There was no shocks, no edge-of-the-seat tension, and certainly no surprises. Some excellent special effects, though even these are becoming quite standard these days. The overall mood of our party was mixed – some loved it, some hated it. The gerrod.com rating: 5/10.
