One of the most obvious things about New York is that it’s crowded. There are people everywhere – you should see 5th avenue around midday. So of course, this means that the chances of finding a nice, quiet place to sit, rest, eat, etc. are slim to none.
Going for lunch is a classic example. Generally I try to avoid peak hours, and instead take a late lunch around 1:30pm – but somtimes (like today), the hunger pains hit early, and I’m faced with a lunch time crowd. No biggie – when you take lunch at 12:30 PM, expect a crowd.
But today, people still managed to surprise me. I had to head over to Maddison Avenue to check out a store, so I thought I’d grab Chipotle on my way back to the office. The line was out the door, and winding along the pavement! I figured that 1/2hr was too long to wait for a fajita, so I headed to the local Subway instead.
Unfortunately, the line at Subway was also none-too-promising – however a lot shorter than Chiptole. But to their discredit – they only had 2 people serving. 2 people! During peak eating hours! What were they thinking?!
Due to the slow service, the wait was about 20 minutes. (I was regretting skipping Chipotle.) Now, what would you do if you were facing a 20 minute wait before you could order? Provided you haven’t walked out, I figure a normal person would probably look over the menu (extensively, to chew up a bit more time), then decide exactly what they want. Seems reasonable, no? Yet the number of fools who answer the “May I take your order?” prompt with, “Errr… uhm, now, lemmie see….” – what were you doing for the last 20 minutes?! Why can’t these people decided what they want without being asked?! Idiots.

To avoid peak hours during lunch break and to avoid having lunch late why don’t you take a pack lunch from home?
very very good point!! I’m with Katie – eat a home made sanger gerry – get with the program. everyone’s doing it these days. no one actually buys lunch anymore!
Maybe not in Brisbane ladies, but c’mon, this is New York, USA! Making lunch sounds like manual labour… as if! It’s like Homer’s motto when he runs for sanitation commissioner:
Let someone else do it!
Sound advice from a wise man.
Plus there’s no office fridge to keep anything fresh. How sucky is that?
This is a tough one G and I understand your frustrations – lunch is a very important part of the day, especially to a pregnant person!
My solution: take an apple to eat while waiting in line, and then you won’t be so hungry (and a little less cranky) when you finally get some lunch.
Tell your boss that you need a lunch lady to help improve staff efficency!
Sorry…….. a lunch person! (didn’t mean to be sexist with my previous comment)
Idiots – well they are American aren’t they!
[...] turns out that I’m not the only one who doesn’t appreciate people who can’t make up their mind when ordering off a menu. When waiting in line for our cheese steaks, I again found myself with a [...]
