On Kay’s recommendation I went to see the film Ladies in Lavender and it rocks! It is definitely a chick flick but one that you could feel perfectly safe in taking your Mum or your Nana to see. And boys, you’ll get brownie points with your softie wife/girlfriend for taking her. Strangely, it’s had full release in Australia but is only showing at arthouse theatres and film festivals here.
The movie tells the story of two sisters, a spinster and a widow living in Cornwall in the 1930s. The sisters are played by two of the greatest actresses ever – Judi Dench and Maggie Smith (both seemingly without makeup). I won’t tell you anymore, since I went in knowing nothing and was very pleasantly surprised. Hopefully you will be too.
My moviegoing experience was enhanced by seeing it in the beatiful Paris Theatre, which is like a traditional stage theatre complete with balcony seating. I was surrounded by oldies, who whisper to each other at what others would consider a loud speaking volume. They were so noisy and giddy and hilarious! One old gal just couldn’t keep her mouth shut and kept getting shushed. Normally I’d probably get annoyed at this but for some reason I was just incredibly entertained!
kristy.gerrod.com rating: 10. Great acting, great scenery, great score, honest portrayal, original concept. Perfect.

Hey mate,
The did a review of this movie on the ABC, with that dozey couple who disagree on everything, however they both completely bagged this movie. I was quite surprised, because I thought it would be a lovely movie to see from the snippets I witnessed, and the cast involved. I would take your review over theirs anyday, so I will now make an effort to see it (if it is still on at the cinemas), or at least hire it out on dvd if I get the chance. Cheers!
Though everyone is entitled to their own opinions on movies, I’m honestly surprised to hear this movie bagged. Though I freely admit that Gerrod wouldn’t enjoy it, I thought it was top notch in terms on quality and originality – two aspects that aren’t open to too much debate. Hmmm. I stick with my review but will be keen to hear your opinion!
Alan (friend) and I were going to see it because of
a) it has v nice scenery
b) there is some German influence and this should add to one’s knowledge of German culture
c) the music is superb!
Unfortunately we have had clashing committments and have been unable to organise a suitable time.
Hmm, unfortunately there isn’t much hope of learning about German culture from the film. Though a few characters communicate in German, none of them are of German origin. Incidentally, I was amazed at how much of their speech I understood from my high school German lessons! Admittedly, they were using very simple phrases, but I was still pleasantly surprised.

Don’t let that deter you though – still worth seeing!
Kristy has turned pink too!
Yup, she sure has! Figured it makes it easier to tell the kristy stories from the gerrod stories. Hope you like it!
And, now you can post comments in a colour of your choice. Pretty trippy, eh?
Very cool – and the pink does make it easier to identify who the writer is! Great idea!
