Operation Adventure

Pop quiz folks – how many boroughs in New York City? And if you think you know how many there are, can you name them?

Today we ventured out of Manhattan (hint) to explore Queens (hint, hint) which is divided up into suburbs with different ethnic influences. We took the 7 subway to the end of the line to start our adventure in Flushing, where the shops have a distinctly asian flavour. From the wide selection of Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine we chose to eat at the Flushing Noodle House and thoroughly enjoyed our fresh and authentic Chinese food.

Next stop was Flushing Meadows Corona Park, home to the US Open Tennis, Shea Stadium where a Yankees v Mets game was in progress, and two World Fairs (1938 & 1964/5). The ultra cool remants of the World Fairs include the Unisphere and the three towers featured in Men in Black.

After walking close to 40 blocks through the Spanish section of Queens we were suddenly in the Indian section. Here, shops sell saris and awesome Indian food, though we were still too full from our Chinese to sample it. Our brief visit here was followed by a quick stop in the Irish district for a beer in an Irish Pub (seemed somewhat appropriate) and a good sit to watch the end of the baseball game on tele.

Our last stop in Queens was at the Courthouse Square stop to see one of the last remnants of graffiti in NYC. It was supposed to be awesome, but we were underimpressed. The highlight of this stop was seeing a guy, trying to look nonchalant as he strolled past with the tell-tale jingle of an aerosol paint can in his pocket.

sorry folks, this is looking like a long story. will be sure to add piccies to spice it up.

Determined to get value from our all day subway passes we then journeyed on to Times Square for a spot of shopping. On our walk home we found that 6th Avenue was closed off for a street fair. What an awesome city! Gerrod reckons the only reason we enjoyed the street fair was that we were on foot, and not in a car getting frustrated about redirected traffic.

Well, we’re home now and enjoying putting our feet up and enjoying our first NY thunder storm. So far, it’s no match for the power and beauty of a Queensland one! The Brissie hailstorm last week will be pretty hard to beat!

Oh, and an answer to the boroughs challenge will follow for those of you who haven’t already looked it up online!

Nah, didn’t see the Nanny but the song was certainly going through my head all day! In fact, whenever I hear the word ‘Flushing’ I start humming to myself. It’s a curse!
