According to gerrod.com convention, a review must be named after the film. But if I was at liberty to select my own title it would be “Oompa Loompas and Squirrels”. OK? Moving on…
Yesterday Cathy and Carrie joined me in seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You may already know that I’m a big fan of chocolate so I was keen to see what Johnny Depp and friends had to offer.
They didn’t disappoint: It was just as much of an adventure as the original. Totally suitable for children and less scary than its predecessor.
Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Willy Wonka was excellent, once you get past his likeness to Michael Jackson with that whiter-than-white skin. He was more quirky than Gene Wilder, but not as mean.
Charlie Bucket (Freddy Highmore) is also a lot more likeable in this version with an endearing little lisp. He’s such a nice little boy that I was really hoping he’d find a golden ticket (imagine my delight when he did!). I was willing to go out and buy the boy a bar myself if necessary!
But now to the most important characters: the Oompa Loompas. Or should I say, the Oompa Loompa. On dude plays all of the Oompa Loompas. Talk about technology making people’s jobs redundant! One actor playing an entire staff of Oompa Loompas?? I’ll have to take that one to the guys at the O.L. union.
Got to give the knee-high little fella(fellas?) credit for synchronised swimming in a river of chocolate though.
But you just cannot knock a movie with squirrels. Clever little working squirrels who somehow resist the urge to eat the nuts they are shelling. Onya squirrels! But who says Oompa Loompas can’t shell peanuts? Hmmm. Another point for the union meeting…
The kristy.com rating? 9/10. I really really enjoyed myself. You should all go and see it!

I am so looking forward to seeing this movie! I’ve just re-read the books in preparation. Thanks for the review.
I’m dying to see this movie! Can’t wait to see you starring in it!
Steve is going to take me to Gold Class, not that I think it needs to be, but he knows how much I am looking forward to seeing, and Johnny Depp. I think he’s an awesome actor. Glad it met the Oompa Rating of 9/10.
