Governor’s Island

Continuing along our “list of things we haven’t seen in NY yet”, Kristy and I jumped on a ferry out to Governor’s Island yesterday. The island is located just 7 minutes ferry ride south of Manhattan, neighbouring Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Needless to say, the entire island enjoys a fantastic view of downtown Manhattan. It’s covered in forts and cannons, as its main purpose throughout history was to defend Manhattan against whoever was invading. (If you’re interested in a more detailed account of Governor’s Island, check out the link above.)

For Kristy and I, it was just nice to be out of the city – even if it was only 1/2 a mile out. We couldn’t believe how much cleaner the air was – I guess you just get used to all the pollution in Manhattan. (Jean made a comment to this effect when she was here too, so I know it’s not just me that notices it.)

After doing a guided tour with ranger Michael, we wandered around for a while taking photos of this-and-that, then relaxed by eating some Twisties on the lawn (thanks Racey!). We headed home after our adventure, and crashed from all the walking around in the sun. We enjoyed our visit, and it has lots of cool scenery (would be an awesome place for wedding photos) – but now that we’ve crossed it off our list, we probably won’t be going back there in a hurry.
