It was one of those days where no-one could decide what we should do, so Racey and I came up with a surprise plan for Kristy and Jean. We told them to “meet us in 10 minutes at the subway station”, and then quickly went to grab some snackage. After meeting them, we headed up to Central Park, where we rented a boat and went rowing along the lake!
Lemmie tell ya somethin’ – rowing in 30°C heat (or there abouts) is a great form of exercise – I was sweating up a storm! Stacey took over to give me a break, but it soon became apparent that her navigation skills were much more appreciated than her rowing ability. But it was all a lot of fun, especially stopping under the various trees to enjoy the shade and have a snack. To give the ladies that authentic gondola experience, I even sang to them in French. (Not knowing any French beyond “je m’appelle Gerrod” (I am Gerrod) I was kind-of making the words up, but the ladies were still impressed anyway).
I was pretty hot and exhausted from all the rowing, so we took a breather by sitting around in central park, watching folk play frisbee and feeding a little squirrel (he came up and ate cashews right out of our hands!). When I finally got my breath back (and had cooled down somewhat), we headed out for an iced coffee, and then back home. Since we hadn’t really had lunch, we went for an early dinner at our local chinese restaurant (thanks Jeremy for the recommendation!) – it’s a corker! Dinner for 4, only $33! And, that even included an entree!
So after a big day of adventure, we were home by 6 PM. It feels weird to have dinner so early. We’re polishing off the weekend with a few beers, a trip to the roof (to watch the sun set over Manhattan), and a spot of Boggle. Quite sporting, really.
