A few people have been asking what the story is with my current employment contract, so I thought I’d give y’all the low-down.
Basically, I was hired as a “mission replacement” – which means, one of the lads from work was heading out on mission, and they needed someone to fill his shoes in his absence. (“Going on mission” means you head out to one of the missions operated by the Department of Peace Keeping Operations (DPKO), to help out in whatever way you can.) The original contract was broken into 2 – the first of five months, the second of six.
However, things became a little complicated when the mission ended somewhat prematurely on the 19th of May, and the aforementioned lad returned to claim his shoes desk. So instead of a nice phat 6 month contract stretching from May – October, I have been existing on short-term contracts each of 3 months or less (the shortest one so far was 11 days). The intent has always been to keep me here until the 31st of October in whatever way possible. As such, I am now on the final instalment of my final contract. “So what happens after that?” I hear you ask… well, that’s all completely up in the air at the moment.
If you’ve read this far, you can now consider yourself an informed member of the community. Needless to say, planning our lives for the past (and next!) few months has been somewhat of a nightmare. In the coming weeks, we hope to hear more from “the powers that be”, so we can plan some much needed down time, not to mention the rest of our lives. Well, at least the next part of our lives, anyway.

Love the new header. Very nice. Ja.
I just hope you can stay forever….
Not knowing the future…is a big big one to come to terms with ….. Trying to work it out is very stressful….
Know that someone else is planning your future and all will be cool. Enjoy the holiday while you are there.
Jeremiah 29:11
Whoa not good with the uncertainty. I assume the UN has sponsored your work visa which would make finding new work in the big apple a little difficult..

Scott
Just take every day as it comes, dont stress about what you have no control over. Just live for the moment and worry about what if scenarios when they occur and look upon your time there as a paid holiday. I mean how hard can that be.

Its getting close to fall now so you will have to plan a trip through Virginia etc.

Hope you have been down to Baltimore for some of those crabs!
Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. We’re certainly a lot more relaxed about the whole situation now compared to how we were at first (why worry about something you can do nothing about?).

Anyway, we’ve started planning some holidays for the near future – more on that later!
