Sunday started with an early morning call from some dude who has since been referred to as ‘my Spanish friend’ (not only a wrong number, but the wrong language too).
After being woken, we took Uncle Raymond out for a yummy breakfast at Mamma’s Kitchen. The fresh OJ was made on Florida oranges (yum!) and our generously portioned meals were heaps cheaper than Manhattan prices. The more we travel, the more we learn how expensive our city is. Our friendly southern waitress, Doris, was very attentive and threw in lots of ‘darlin’s’. We were a bit confused when she asked if Gerrod wanted any ‘A1’ on his steak. It seems that it’s a sauce of sorts that is so famous it goes by its brand name. Like Bandaids, but tastier.
We then farewelled Raymond, promising to return or to welcome him in NY if he wants to visit. It was great for me to meet him and I was amazed at how many phrases and mannerisms he used that reminded me of Kay. He even taught us a Jamaicanism. When discussing the heat of chilis and curries he urged us to remember: ‘is not the hello but the ta-ta’.
