Priceless advice

For a while now, Kristy has been expressing her need for a fancy digital SLR, and given that October is a month filled with occasions for us (both our birthdays, and our anniversary) we’ve been carefully considering fulfilling that need. But, at a cost of around USD$1,300 just for the camera body, or USD$1,800 for the body and a decent lens, it’s not a purchase to be taken on lightly.

As such, when I found one seller that had the camera AND the lens for a good $400 less than everyone else, I thought I was on to a winner! But, somewhat skeptical, I thought it would be best to try and find some consumer reviews of the store. Finally I stumbled on to reseller ratings and found their entry; the reports were not good. Their overall score was 0.18/10, and almost every review was similar to this one:

I was looking for a Nikon D70s and this store had them for only $479.00 so I bought it. Then next day they call me and tell me it doesn’t come with a battery, charger, or anything like it does at all other stores. They also told me that the body was made of plastic parts and wanted me to buy the upgraded body for $899.00 which is the price at other stores that include a warrenty, battery, charger and all of the other stuff. Then they wanted me to buy a battery for $299.00 and a warrenty for $300.00. I canceled the order after they had charged my card and still haven’t got my money back. DON’T SHOP HERE!!!!!! They are scam artist.

It’s amazing what you can find on the internet.

So you’re going to get it from there then? ;)

Yeah, watch out for all those internet camera places, I heard of that scam over and over again when I was researching to buy. Most of the places are in Brooklyn too! Doh… Compare and check out their rating on CNET first for sure. Or best of all, go to B&H in Manhattan, a HUGE camera-video-audio store on 9th Ave where most professionals go and they’ve got a great reputation. They know what they’re talking about, give advice & recommendations and their prices are pretty in line. Plus it’s right there if you have any issues. But definitely check out their calendar for October before you go, it’s run by Hasidic Jews and closed for most of the month!

I just bought the D70 for work a couple months ago. Plus a whole kit of lens, flashes, flash stands, tripod, etc. and I think all of that was 2K, but I can’t find the invoice so I don’t remember exactly. It’s a good camera for sure.
