Elizabethtown

Trying to find a movie that each of 4 people hasn’t seen is often a bit difficult; usually you have to resort to whatever the most recent release was in order to get something that no-one has seen. That was certainly the case for us last night, so Jason and Louise joined Kristy and I in seeing Elizabethtown. The plot outline on IMDB pretty much sums it up perfectly:

During an outrageous memorial for a Southern patriarch, an unexpected romance blooms between a young woman and man.

As you probably guessed, this wasn’t my first choice of movie, but with a huge cast including Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Biel, and Alec Baldwin (for all of 3 minutes), I figured it couldn’t be all bad. And it wasn’t – wasn’t all bad, that is. There was an occasional laugh here and there, and I really enjoyed the roadtrip that Bloom’s character takes during the last 20 minutes of the film. Sadly though, I had to sit through 2 hours of drivel before it was roadtrip time, and though the roadtrip was good, it certainly wasn’t worth waiting for.

This is one of those films that has a little bit of everything, but adds up to a whole bunch of nothing. Apparently good for fans of Almost Famous – but given that I also though that sucked, there really were no saving graces. gerrod.com rating: 5/10.

Meghan and I saw it last weekend – I think it takes every single scene 20% too far. Disappointing for sure.
