Marriott bar v Hard Rock

Elevator up to the Lounge Bar

Last night was Rebecca’s final night in New York, so we hit The Lounge Bar at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square for a farewell drink. The attraction of the bar is that it rotates to give you a 360 degree view of the city. Oh, and also that the elevators that you take to the top are really funky.

Unfortunately though, our experience wasn’t all that great. The drinks ring in at the higher end of the price scale, and the service was just terrible. We were sitting for 20 minutes before a waiter came and saw us, then another 10 before our drinks came, and then 20 more just waiting for the bill to arrive! Ordinarily the time wouldn’t have been an issue, but our waiter was polite enough to inform us that if we were still there after 9 PM, we would have had to fork out a 7 dollar “cover charge” for the privilage of still sitting in their chairs. Not friggin likely!

So after almost an hour of mainly waiting, we were all starving, and decided to trundle downstairs to the Hard Rock cafe. That was the first time Kristy and I have eaten at their new restaurant in Times Square, and I’m delighted to report that the food and service was much improved since our last New York visit. And boy, is that place HUGE!

Bec, Louise, and Jason

By the time we left, it was well past 11 PM. The ladies jumped in a cab, and Jason and I braved the walk home in the freezing cold. Brrr! Boy was I glad to put head to pillow last night.

Anyway Becs, hope you had a great flight home – see you in Glebe! ;-)

Hi Gerrod,

Saw Ben and Michelle for dinner last night and I was mentioning that I am going to NYC for Xmas/NYE. They suggested that I jump onto this blog to get some ideas for cool (local) things to do/be seen.

If you have any ideas off the top of your head of places to go, please let me know.

I am trying to find an authentic place to eat Christmas night and also trying to find a gospel church to visit (in the Bronx). If you can provide some assistance on these two points, that would be great. I have heard Butter is a good place to eat, but not sure that it will be authentic…

We already have a long list of things to do/see but any unique ideas (or those that are not in the Lonely Planet) would be more than welcomed.

Cheers

Laura
