Not surprisingly, we slept both long and well on our first night. Our plan was to head to the foodcourt at Harrods for breakfast, but when we got off our Tube station we found out it didn’t open until midday. So instead, we headed to the local Giraffe where we indulged in their awesome brunch menu. The vanilla choc-chip latte was exceptionally good!
Ben and Michelle then took us for a walk through Kensington Gardens; the highlight of which was seeing the very bench seat that Ben and Michelle got engaged on. How exciting! I figured they should dedicate the seat to them, but unfortunately someone else seems to have already taken that honour.
By the time we walked the rest of the journey to Harrods, it was well and truly open. We did a cursory tour around a few of the floors, but we were really there for the food. Our first stop was the chocolate bar, a little in-house cafe that specialises in – you guessed it – chocolate! Absolutely the best chocolate milkshake that I’ve ever enjoyed.
Next we headed down to the food halls. Imagine a bunch of rooms, all set up delicatessen style, and each of which specialises in a different type of food: wines and liquors, baked goods, meats, and – our favourite – sweets! Yummo! It was a food lover’s paradise. I just couldn’t go past the fudge, and couldn’t decide between the baileys and the butterscotch – so we got a bit of both!
Our final stop for the day was at Buckingham Palace. We thought it a bit rude that Her Maj didn’t come out to say hello, but we could only blame ourselves – I mean, we really should have checked her schedule before landing ourselves on her doorstep.
The usual suspects – Pat, Nathan, Karl, and Caroline – were kind enough to join us for dinner that night at a Gastropub called The Academy. Once again it was great to catch up with everybody – with only 4 precious days in London, our main goal was to maximise our time with our friends!
After a fantastic day and evening, we were once again happy to turn in for the night.

Oh Aussies, how you maximize a word with a simple "s", I’m sure you felt totally comfortable in the land that shares your spelling, your metric system and your tendency towards all things Cadbury. Ha! I’m thinking that the Queen had more grace than to step out only to be upstaged by the likes of Mrs. Thomas. And on a final note (really, I’m not writing a novel here) the chocolate bar reminded me of an amazing chocolate bar I visited in Seattle. I didn’t even know that they existed beforehand — the experience was ethereal. Also, the West Village NYC has a great peanut butter "bar" full of many, many concoctions that I’m sure you’ll appreciate. We’ll all have to hit it up sometime.
