Coming to London

Things weren’t looking too good for our trip to London when we got to JFK. The British Airways counter was jammed full of people, and we figured at least a 1 hour wait. Thankfully, we figured out how to use the “self-service” check-in, so we managed to get through in about 45 minutes, but we still had to almost run to the gate.

We got there only to discover that the plane was so full (and our tickets so last minute) that we weren’t even sitting together. Using New Year’s resolution number 1, I was bold and asked at the service counter to find out if we could get our seats reassigned. The lady wasn’t optimistic, saying “I’ll see what I can do, but that plane is pretty full – no promises. We left our tickets with her to see what she could do.

10 minutes later when we returned, it seemed the news was grim. “Sorry”, the lady said, “I couldn’t get you two seats together”. “It’s ok” I replied, “thank you for trying”. Then she said, “But I upgraded you to business class, and now you’re sitting right behind each other.”

Kristy in Business Class

Boy had she made our day! We thanked her profusely! We were so excited! The news got even better when we handed over our tickets when boarding the plane – our seats had been further upgraded so that we were sitting together – in business class!

Needless to say, that was the best flight of our lives. Suffice to say that BA’s business class seats lie 100% flat, which makes a big difference when you’re trying to sleep. We were still pretty wrecked by the time we got to London (it’s a 6 hour flight, we left NY at 7 PM and arrived at 6 AM, with only about 2 hours of sleep) – but it still made a huge difference.

British Airways is now my number 1 airline!

So why only two hours sleep if you were in business class with flat bed seats??

Wow that’s so lucky! We’ve been in the same position many times and have never been offered an upgrade!

Jason – well, first they served our meals (we had a menu and got to choose, I had the steak, Kristy had the pasta). So after that was all done, we were about 2 hours into the flight. We slept "on-and-off" for the next few hours, and then they woke us up for breakfast.

I was really out of it when they woke us up (i.e. really fast asleep), so I’m certain that on a longer flight we would have slept even more.
