On Saturday night, we celebrated the 25th birthday of my friend and workmate Claire with my suave work buddies (pictured below) and an assortment of Claire’s friends (including a very friendly Brit wearing a shirt that said “pink is for gangsters”).
That meant out first foray into the nightlife of the Lower East Side. We had no idea how ‘happening’ this area is, and how busy it stays until the wee small hours of the morning. We’ll definitely be heading back for a closer look!
The party started in the lounge of the Hotel on Rivington. It has a funky unmarked entrance that if you weren’t in the know (as we now are) you could easily walk past and never know what lay behind the heavy red curtain. Later in the evening we migrated up to Claire’s suite where we enjoyed champagne, cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine and gorgeous Manhattan views.
Afterwards (by which I mean, “well after midnight”), we dined at still busy Schillers, where the refreshingly honest wine list featured only three options, “cheap, decent or good”. The “cheap” option is rumoured to be the best and when I asked why Aussie wines were not available, the oh-so-diplomatic John responded, “because then you’d need a sensational category as well”! How true.
