Continuing on the movie theme, Gerrod and I went to see Syriana on the weekend. It’s one we’ve intended to see for a while, so we were eagerly anticipating this “thinking” movie. (As opposed to Adam Sandler et al.)

Thinking indeed. I think I’ve done enough thinking for a lifetime. Days after, I’m still thinking about it, but am no closer to putting the pieces together.

If you haven’t already heard, the film is a “political thriller that unfolds against the intrigues and corruption of the global oil industry”. There are about six subplots running simultaneously, ultimately to show that “it’s all connected” and that strings are pulled all over the world so that rich and powerful Western interests (read between those lines!) get what they want. The problem is that they try to communicate so much, and in such detail, that we really had trouble following along.

The synopsis on the Syriana website is excellent: in fact it’s helping me to put the pieces together. If you’re interested in seeing the film, read this synopsis first. If you lose interest before finishing the read, this isn’t the movie for you.

kristy.com rating? Probably 5 out of 10. It has great potential, fascinating subject matter, but fails to deliver. Plus I had to close my eyes and cover my ears a bit too much in the scary bits.
