Add that to the list of things we miss from home. Not that we don’t have supermarkets here; on the contrary, there’s at least 6 within 10 blocks (less than 10 minutes walk) of our apartment. Even better, we usually buy our groceries online, which is both cheap and convenient. But there’s always something we forgot, or a fresh ingredient that we need for dinner, so we end up going to the supermarket at least a couple of times a week.
Supermarkets in Manhattan are generally small, crowded, and filled with unhelpful, disinterested staff. Of course I’m making very broad, sweeping statements here, but generally I think it’s fairly accurate. Like tonight, when I asked a dude with a tragic mullet, “excuse me, do you sell rice noodles?”, he simply turned, then gave me the lookTM. To his credit, he put in some effort, by sussing out the store’s range of pasta before saying, “nup, we don’t sell ‘em.” and going back to his previous duties. Oh wait, that’s not entirely true – he also held up a “Heat and Serve Chicken Flavoured Rice Dish” and asked if that was what I was after. Needless to say I eventually found said rice noodles a couple of aisles over, next to refried beans (of course).
What I wouldn’t give for a good Coles or Woolies on our street! Hiring enthusiastic teenagers who will happily work for seven bucks an hour really has its benefits.

But what would we have to talk about then G? Remember the many animated talks with Jason that started with: "I was just at Associated Supermarket and …"?
Would you believe that just last night I was trying to track down rice noodles at our local Sainsbury’s?! Unfortunately they didn’t have any so I had to stop by the local Asian supermarket. Bizarre!!!
Perhaps Ben and you could get a franchise and have a local branch of Coles under your appartment…you with the checkout experience and Ben with the deli knowledge would be off to a good start. You might even tempt Jason to join you and offer his hardware experience!
I wouldn’t miss Coles too much if I were you. Staff might be a tad more helpful than what you are experiencing over there but the quality of the fresh food has really gone down hill
Yes…actually it might be better if you capitalised on Kristy’s WW experience and let her manage the three of you in a WW franchise!
Do you mean Big W Dad? They don’t sell groceries!

Michelle R: Actually I’d probably prefer a Woolies anyway, but you know, there’s that whole "previous employer" thing and all…. !
