After about 15 months of restless sleep, waking with back pain, and bitter complaints, we finally bit the bullet and bought ourselves a better mattress for our bed. When we first got here, economical was top of our agenda – so we settled with the top-of-the-line mattress from Ikea. Let me tell you something; Ikea isn’t known for their mattresses for good reason – because they SUCK! Don’t be fooled by any of the hype, the only thing you’re guaranteed with buying a mattress from Ikea is that you’re in for a lot of unhappy sleeping!
(Disclaimer: This may not be true for kids mattresses; kids weigh a lot less, so decent support probably isn’t paramount. But you older folks, steer clear!)
The whole buying experience for our new mattress was very New York. About 5 PM Saturday afternoon, I says to the wife, “hey, lets get a new mattress”. “OK!” she replies, and after some quick online research, we trotted up to the showroom on 64th and 2nd. Bypassing the super expensive displays ($3,000 and up), we found the mattresses in our price range right at the back of the store. After issuing the standard testing procedure (lying down), we found the one for us, and headed up to the counter to pay.
Of course, we had to have it delivered, so when old mate asked “When would you like this delivered sir?” I enquired about our options.
“What are my options?”
Old mate came back with an offer we couldn’t refuse. “How about tonight?” And that was that. So within a few hours of leaving home, our mattress had arrived. Only in New York!
So now it’s under the 15 day sleep-test (we can return it within 15 days and get our money back). Night one was only partially successful – we still tossed and turned a bit – but we’re putting that down to it being so different to our old bed. The good news however – no back pain this morning, and no sign of my typical morning headache! Things can only get better from here.

Awesome stuff. Fancy getting service like that and that the store was still open after 5pm on a Saturday! Oh the joys of living in BrisVegas.
Scott and I have talked on and off about getting a new mattress for the last…3 or so years? I didn’t think we went that cheap when we bought ours at the beginning of our marriage but the hole/hollow on Scott’s side suggests otherwise. Of course the mattress is now down on the list of priorities now that Catherine has started climbing, the lounge is the first on the list. With cushions that flip and slide out because they don’t actually fit, it’s a pretty hazardous job for a little bub to climb onto the lounge!
I’m so jealous. I would loooove a new mattress.
