Back to The Met

After getting a taste of The Met the other night (we stopped in quickly on our way home), we were both keen to go back and visit the entire museum. So that’s exactly what we did yesterday afternoon!

The Met is huge! There were a number of times that we got lost inside it’s great halls. But that’s ok; it just meant we saw more stuff than we had set out to do. The Met has more ancient artifacts than any museum that I’ve been to before, much of it from ancient Egypt. Some of the jewelery, pottery, stone carvings, and weapons we were looking at dated back over 4,000 years!

Old-school graffiti

Two of the more impressive “displays” that they have are two “complete” tombs from Egypt! (Complete = as complete as they were when they were found, but quite clearly there’s bits missing). What I didn’t expect to see though, was the graffiti. Long before spray cans were invented, it seems that carving your name into the stone was the way to go. You can see here the names, “L Corry”, “H Corry”, and right down the bottom, “J Livingston, January 1 1818″.

The Egyption stuff was cool; the other display that I was most interested in was the armory. Full suits of armor on display from various periods of history. That stuff must have been uncomfortable – and weighed a ton! But interesting none-the-less; I especially like the fully clad horses with riders, and the armor of King Henry VIII – the note next to it described that it was “from later in his life, when he was rather overweight”. The armor had a beer belly! Hehheeee….

Armored Horses

After about 3 hours of wondering around, our legs grew weary and we headed home. The Met is probably one of the better museums that I’ve visited, but I still prefer those more like the Air and Space Museum in Washington. I get bored easily – I need stuff to play with :-) .

I thought the old graffiti on the Egyptian stuff was pretty quirky too. I wonder whether it was the rebels who graffitied in those days too…

I really enjoy the armoury section of the wing – especially all the different swords, katanas, daggers and shields!
