While back home holidaying in Australia, I took great pleasure in doing the washing. That’s because, unlike here, I could do washing whenever I wanted, with minimum preparation, then hang the clothes outside to dry in the sunshine.
Here, I scurry around getting enough quarters or dollar bills to pay for the priviledge of washing, lug the dirty clothes and detergent down to the basement, insert US$ 2.25 per load, wait 45 minutes and pay the same amount to use the dryer or bring the clothes back upstairs to hang to dry in an open closet (that’s if I can find enough hangers).
And today I find that one selfish neighbour (not sure which one) has decided to simultaneously use all six washing machines, leaving residents on all fifteen floors to wait their turn. Grrr. In Australia, it almost seemed like fun, and at least I had some control over the process.
It’s kind of funny the things that you miss.

Someone is using all six machines?! Holy moly, they must only wash once per month! And they must own a lot of clothes!
Probably one of those rich snobs in a penthouse apartment
Hehehe! Or maybe somebody’s housekeeper. Perhaps the same one who keeps leaving the gas on…
I feel your pain. We’re fortunate enough to have a washing machine in our flat, but I certainly miss being able to hang stuff outside and know it will be dry in a couple of hours, rather than a couple of days. It’s always a bit ridiculous trying to string the sheets over chairs and doors etc to get them dry!
Yeah, washing in NYC is the worst! I live in a 4 building co-op and the building next door is the one with the laundry room. Each trip involves several flights of stairs and a few doors to unlock. And the sad thing is this is a luxury because my last building didn’t have any laundry room at all. Nothing worse than the laundromat on a Saturday!
When I finally did get to use a machine, I had the added pleasure of being wolf-whistled by a workman in the basement.
SAD!!
We had a small taste of This in melboune Constantly feeling like a Chinese Laundry and having to wait 3 days for anything to dry naturally.
With the added stress of lugging it around and waiting your turn. I can’t even imagine how you do the sheets.
Gerrod you need to by Kristy a present!
What, a washing machine??
How about one of those washer/dryer things in one? I’m not sure how good they’d be though…
Clothes in Brisbane are taking a few days to dry at the moment and we’re happy about it!!! Would you believe there’s rain? No, I’m serious. It really has been raining! Our lawn only looks semi-dead! Heh heh heh. Catherine stood at the window the other day looking out and I could almost see the speech bubble – What is that stuff out there?
completely feel your pain guys! In the same situation as Michelle re hanging out clothes to dry over chairs in the loungeroom. Everything gets a nice damp smell that no amount of cuddly fabric softener can hide!
