Redefining the red-eye

Jason reckons that his flight to Cairns was the flight from hell, but I reckon I can compete.

Yesterday was a rainy day in New York – thunder and lightning, the works – which meant one thing for flying: delays. However, by midday, things had cleared right up, and according to the FAA website, things were starting to get back on track. Hence, to make my 6:50PM flight, and factoring in traffic, I figured I’d leave home by 4PM.

Traffic was nowhere near as bad as I had thought, so I was at the airport around 4:20PM. When I checked in, I was told by the friendly sales-agent computer that my flight was delayed until 8:15PM, due to weather delays. An extra hour and a bit – no biggie…

… except, that 8:15PM soon became 9:30PM, which then became 10:50PM, and finally settled at 11:50PM. The board showing the departing flights was soon dominated by the word “Cancelled”, and I couldn’t decide what would be better – being cancelled and rescheduled (but at least having a firm plan), or hanging on the uncertainty of having a delayed flight.

Thankfully, by around 9PM, the weather had cleared right up, and the flight-cancelling trend seemed to have stopped. Our schedule somehow got moved back to 10:50PM, but it was 11:55PM when we finally pushed back from the gate, and 12:30AM when we finally took off.

I arrived in Fort Lauderdale around 3AM, tired, but together. And yet for some reason, after arriving at the Cooke’s house, it took me ages to get to sleep. Go figure!

Buddy!

At least there was a friendly face here to greet me when I arrived!
