Spurred on by Nathan’s new earphones, I decided that it was finally time to part with the crapola earbuds that Apple give you with an iPod, and get a decent pair of headphones instead.
With the number of recommendations that I’d had for Sennheiser headphones, I headed straight for their website to check out their offerings. Unfortunately, I’ve had a bad experience with the noise cancelling earbuds like the ones that Nathan got (they gave me severe headaches), so that ruled them out of the picture. But anyway, I was hesitant to get earbuds to begin with – having a tragus piercing makes them rather uncomfortable, and very prone to falling out!
So with that consideration, and a moderate budget of $50, I still managed to find a heap of headphones that looked suitable. My first purchase was a pair of the PMX100 headsets. They got decent reviews, looked fairly trendy, and I figured that since they weren’t an over-the-head style, they would be a bit more comfortable.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t have been more wrong with that assumption! Perhaps I have a sensitive head or something – but I found that they put way too much pressure on my ears. They sat very tightly around my head – I guess to compensate for the fact that there’s really nothing else holding them up, other than the pressure. (That’s not quite true – they have little clips that go over your ears, but the pressure is the main thing holding them in place). Also, they seem to be made for much bigger heads than mine – the band around the back stuck way out past the back of my head. Back to Buy.com they went.
But to be fair, they sounded great! Perhaps a little bit too much emphasis on bass for my liking, but with portable MP3 players, that’s usually a good thing. If you were a big dance/rap music kind-of person, and you didn’t have a problem with how tight the earphones are, then these would be perfect for you.
Once the headphones were on their way back to the store, I ordered a pair of Sennheiser’s older models as a replacement – the PX100. At first I didn’t want headphones that sit over-the-top of my head (can’t mess up the precious hair!), but in the end they seemed like the best option. But that’s really the only bad thing I can say about these headphones. I had very high expecations for them, since they actually received an even better review than the first pair I bought.
And so far, I have to agree fully with the review. The sound is simply amazing – very deep bass, without sacrificing the higher ranged treble. Overall they have a more balanced sound than the first pair that I had. They’re also very comfortable and lightweight, so I don’t expect any problems with long-term wear either.
And, clocking in at under $50 (including 3 day delivery which came in 2), I’d recommend these babies to anyone. gerrod.com rating: 10/10. And a big thank-you to Shane for all the advice while I was browsing!
