Now, of course there are exceptions to this rule (e.g. foreign films), but: if you’ve never heard of a movie before, don’t know any of the cast by name, and have a sneaking suspicion it was “straight to DVD” – well, you’re probably not in for a treat. That was certainly how I felt when “someone” selected Something New for us to watch on Sunday night.
And guess what – I was right! It was not a treat! To be fair, there was nothing bad about the movie, but there wasn’t all that much good about it either. Basic storyline – black girl (Sanaa Lathan) gets set up for a blind date. Blind date turns out to be a white boy (Simon Baker – who as it turns out, I did recognize). Black girl doesn’t date white boys, so leaves the date on awkward terms. Black girl later hires white boy as her landscape architect, and falls for said white boy. Lots of racial tension, break-ups, and make-ups. Moral of the story: love conquors all.
Yes, this is definitely a chick flick. But my advice for the ladies is: don’t waste your credits making your lads see this, when there’s so many better (or is that worse?) movies that you could make him sit through! gerrod.com rating: 5/10.
