Just about every weekend from April to October, New York closes off a section of an avenues, and uses that space to host a street festival. So about two or three times a year, we get one just at the end of our block, on 2nd Ave.
Now, admittedly, it’s very much aimed at tourists; for example, one stall we saw yesterday was selling “genuine NYC style belts”, which I’ve never seen anywhere else during the time that we’ve been here. But, there’s something quite magical about buying yourself a lamb gyro whilst walking on the street between the the high-rises. And at the very least, it certainly makes the walk to the gym a lot more interesting – but it’s hard to stay away from the temptation of a crepe suzette on the way back home!

I wonder if the girl in the red top on the phone is talking to the the guy in the left corner of the photo?
When I was in NYC in 2000, I think I remember one of those. They block of quite a lot of streets don’t they. I think the funnier thing is that I’m sure I had a gyro (funny pronunciations) there as well! Mmmm… gyro.
You’re right Pat – they block off about 20 streets for the fairs! This one went from about 55th to 42nd.
Can’t beat those gyros! I just don’t know why no-one sells them in shops… well, none that are around us anyway!
