Turns out the Keys aren’t all wicked places that are evilly designed to inconspicuously take your money. The Cookes drove down on Saturday, and together we hired a boat, then headed out to see the good bits – the coral reefs about five miles out from shore.

It was beautiful! The seas were a bit choppy, but that was all part of the adventure. I really enjoy snorkelling, so I reckon I could get right in to scuba diving. I’ll put it on my list of things to do before I die (thanks Shelley!).
After we returned the boat, we all headed back to the resort to enjoy the lagoon for one last time. And guess what – the resort still didn’t have power! But we didn’t care – no power meant that our original rooms were still no good, so we spent another night in upgraded luxury!
After a delicious buffet breakfast the next morning, we saw an advertisement for the exact villa that we were staying in at the hotel’s real estate office. Turns out that the carpet, paint, and appliances were all recently replaced, and the villa is up for sale. And the asking price? $609,000! Really glad that we weren’t paying for our accomodation… !
So after saying our goodbyes, we had a fairly uneventful drive back to the airport. On the contrary, our flight home wasn’t exactly uneventful… first, we got assigned seats at opposite ends of the plane, which meant watching a DVD on the laptop together would prove difficult. Thankfully, the nice guy – “Alfonzo” (may not be his real name) – sitting next to Kristy was kind enough to swap with me, so that problem was overcome (no thanks to the rude AA staff!). Secondly, the guy sitting next to Kristy (no, not me! The guy on the other side!) was a traveller’s worst nightmare – amongst a number of other complaints that we had, this dude had seven items that he stashed into the overhead compartment. Again, no thanks to the useless AA staff for not getting him to check his bags.
And finally, when we got back to New York, George was visiting the UN, which meant most of 1st Avenue in Midtown was blocked off… so we had to walk about 2 miles back to our apartment with our 25kg bag! Thanks for nothin’, George!
I’ve uploaded a few photos from Jamaica and the Keys into a new photo album. Enjoy!

Note the girls tanning away and me hiding in the shade? People seem surprised that I’m not tanned, but I’m surprised that I’m not burnt. To misquote Homer’s glamour photographer: sunlight is not my friend!
I’ve just caught up on all your holiday updates – sounds wonderful – despite the few mishaps. I hope it hasn’t been too tough going back to work!
Sounds like you had a great time (except for the trip back – nothing like that to make you want to take another holiday).
