According to the Spanish department, I can! After a gruelling semester of classes, it was a major relief to get the official notice that I passed level 1 spanish!
One of the terrific benefits at work is language classes in all of the six official UN languages. I’ve been studying spanish since September, but have been too afraid to blog about it just in case I didn’t pass!

I’ve been finding the classes really challenging. We’re taught using an immersion method where the teacher, imported from Marbella, Spain, speaks only in spanish. Sounds good in theory, but how can you ever be sure that what you think is going on, is actually what’s happening? For example, my teacher asked me: Where do kangaroos come from? I answered (very loudly and confidently): My name is Kristy. Hmmm. I didn’t know the word for “where” let alone the word for “kangaroo”!
Despite this embarrasing start, it seems I mastered a thing or two, and can now enjoy a relaxing few weeks before the next semester starts!
If you’re curious, it’s el canguro.

Kristy bien hecho
Muchas gracias Jason!
Very cool, congrats! I always wanted to learn Spanish myself. I think immersion is a great way to go actually. When I was in the Dominican Republic and everyone only spoke Spanish, I was forced to start picking it up.
