The weekend seems to have gone as quickly as it came, but we did a lot of stuff so I guess it doesn’t matter. Editors note: this is one of those, “We went here and we did this” type of posts (note for Dr Evil – it involves board games), so I’m going to put it under a “Read more” link, like this:
We started out on Friday night with a Chamber music concert at The Met. No prizes for guessing whose pick that was – watching five dudes on strings isn’t high on my list of ideal ways to spend an evening. That said, I was very surprised how much I enjoyed it – well, the first half anyway. In the second half they added a bloke on piano, and though he played well, to me it just wasn’t as enjoyable.
Friday was a bit of an indulgence day in terms of food, so I tried to pay it off on Saturday with a huge workout at the gym. Spin class + weights + 2km run (have to beat Jason on our latest Nike+ challenge, you know) = 1,000 calories. Woohoo!
Saturday arvo/evening we spent at Sibylle and Jurgen’s place. We finally got to break open my copy of Settlers (thanks again, Cookes!) since S&J are avid players, and you need at least three people to play. Kristy also played – her first time ever – and was pleasantly surprised by how much she enjoyed it. But it’s an awesome game, so I wasn’t surprised at all! Anyway, after dinner (Chinese from Phoenix Garden), S&J’s neighbours came over with a copy of Settlers of the Stone Age, so we gave that a burl as well. It wasn’t bad, actually I thoroughly enjoyed it, except it was the same outcome for me as what Settlers was – I lost by only a round or two. D’oh!
This morning I was once again plagued with guilt about what I ate yesterday, so it was back to spin class again this morning. Today’s instructor is a total workout-nazi, but I guess that’s good because I burnt 600 cals in 45 minutes (am totally loving the new heart-rate monitor). Since it’s been ages since I’ve done spin, and now having done it twice in two days, my butt is uber-sore, which is a total downer. May have to re-consider buying some of those super-good looking bike pants, but not sure if the world is ready for me wearing a pair of those yet.
Anyway, The Hoeft and I met up for a coffee in the afternoon, before scooting down to the Apple Store in SoHo to spend a fat wad of cash. Someone is now the proud owner of a new Macbook Pro! (Note: not me or Karl, though his is only a week old, and now he’s been outed as a Mac owner, ha!) Carrying one of those boxes home on the subway isn’t much fun, but I managed to make it home without getting mugged. Well actually, one guy asked me if I could spare any change, but I didn’t have any, so I didn’t give him any. I felt guilty when I got home though because I found a couple of quarters in my left pocket, and when he asked I only checked in the right. Whoops!
Tonight for dinner we had Ethiopian for the first time, with Karl, Sibylle and Jurgen. It was strange, to say the least. You get this huge plate of stuff, and a plate of “bread” (more like crepes) to eat it with. The idea is you tear off a piece of “bread” then use it to scoop up some of whatever you want from the main plate. Then when you run out of “bread”, no worries – you just start eating the “bread” that the main dish is served on. It’s very communal, really – and actually I quite enjoyed it! Just hope I don’t get hit with that famous “Ethiopian belly” tomorrow

Settlers is awesome! The Stoneage one looks like a good variation.
Yep, definitely is. A bit more complex, but it also moves a bit faster because it’s cheaper to get stuff. Still, hard to take away from the original!
Was that the one just near Little Italy. I think I ate there with Mike and his girlfriend and was extremely surprised at how tasty it all was (not to mention filling). The thought of all that bread expanding…
Nup, it’s way over on the west-side, in Karl’s neighbourhood (think: 10th Avenue).
