When good things go bad slightly worse

Today is the second day running where I would describe the weather as “You’ve got to be kidding” cold. It’s -11C outside, or -19C after wind-chill is applied. And for those of you that think adding in the wind-chill is cheating, you try standing out there in 30kph winds!

Juice it up!

Anyway, this morning we were faced with a dilemma, when we discovered that we didn’t have the fruit we needed to make our regular juice. So, it was either – (a) head to the shops, and face the bitter cold outside, or (b) improvise! (Truth be told, we knew last night that we were out of fruit, but again with the cold…)

So you can probably guess which one won! I managed to find an apple, some orange juice, and raspberry yoghurt – all part of our regular recipe. Then after rummaging through the fridge, I found a few “suitable” substitutions for the missing fruit. Instead of a pear, I used papaya. Instead of an orange, I used frozen strawberries. And just for good measure, I threw in some ground organic spelt grain.

So the result? Well, honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Kristy described it best by saying, “it has a definite texture”. I don’t think I’ll be using the papaya again, but I feel as though the grain is a solid addition (mainly though because I know it’s super healthy for us!).

Overall, I think it’s a unanimous verdict – we’ll pick up some of our regular fruit on the way home!

What is ANYONE doing with PawPaw/Papaya in their fridge? Did you pay for that?

So it’s not just me… paw-paw and papaya really is the same thing… ?

And Shelley – what have you got against it? Delicious! (Just not in a smoothie…)

No it isn’t actually. I thought it was. But this tells me otherwise. Okay, you have permission to call it papaya, I suppose … :P

Don’t you hate it when you run out of juice ingredients. My problem is I don’t usually have much back up fruit and vegies just wouldn’t work! Nice improvising though :)
