(Note: Kirsty and John, Ben and Michelle, and Kristy and I are going to do a combined post for Spain, so stay tuned for that one).
Today was our first day of skiing in Andorra. Unfortunately it hasn’t been the best season here, so the snow coverage is not as thick as it should be. But still, any snow is better than no snow!
Andorra is simply beautiful; with full coverage the skiing here would be amazing. Ben, Pat and I managed to find some decent snow on the other side of the main mountain, and had a few good runs today. I wore my heart rate monitor all day today, turns out that skiing really is a fairly intensive cardio workout; I burnt over 3,200 kCal in just over 5 hours of skiing!
Anyway it’s very late (just gone past midnight) so I should hit the sack; have to be up early for day two tomorrow!

I wouldn’t think it would be that accurate to measure calories lost from a simple heart-rate? If you’re gliding down a hill on your skis, the adrenalin is pumping but you’re not actually doing anything physical to lose them… you could say the same thing if you wore the monitor while watching a scary movie which made your heart pulse
Hahaha…. dude, have you ever skiied? It’s much harder than simply “gliding down a hill” – it’s extremely hard on your muscles. The faster you go, the harder it is (and of course the more fun
). By the time I get to the bottom of a run, the muscles in my legs are usually burning!
Don’t forget also that even if you’re sitting still, you’re still burning calories (just not as quickly)!
Also, the watch takes in more information than just my heart rate – it also reads the rate of descent and the current altitude, and I’ve programmed in my age, weight, sex, and height. Plus it has historical information from previous workouts, so it knows my resting heart rate and average heart rate during exercise. So I’m happy to believe what it says – especially when it comes time to our buffet dinners and I have to replenish the lost calories
Yeh mate, the ‘gliding down a hill’ was definitely tongue-in-cheek
Turn it up Ant
Check out this site. Even at a chump workout that’s almost 2500 calories in 5 hours.
The snow looks pretty good in the picture! Hope you are all having a ball, wish I was there!
Hope you’re having a fantastic time guys! Live it up! Can’t wait for more updates.
