Because New York has been so cold lately (it was snowing on the weekend, on our way out to NJ), we’ve been seeing a lot of movies. Also, Kristy signed up for a trial of Blockbuster Total Access, so now we get new release DVDs in the mail; the quicker you watch ‘em and send ‘em back, the quicker they send you new ones. Sweet!
So last night I sat down to watch my latest pick, Lady in the Water. It’s the most recent film from M. Night Shyamalan, whose other films I have thoroughly enjoyed. The most noticeable difference with this film (in comparison to Shyamalan’s others) is that there’s no major twists. But otherwise, it is in his usual style; only giving away as much information as is necessary, a few hair raising moments, and a kind of off-the-wall, slightly sinister plotline.
Basically, the caretaker of an apartment block discovers a girl who turns out to be a character from a children’s bedtime story. The caretaker then has to work with the other tenants of his building – many whom also turn out to be characters from the bedtime story – to help the girl get back to her land safely.
Weird, right? Though I enjoyed the film, it doesn’t hold a candle to his others; in fact, in comparison, this one is quite tame. I’d probably only recommend it to hardcore fans of Shyamalan’s previous works, or to anyone who is curious, but otherwise, you could safely give it a skip. Though Kirsty will no-doubt be disappointed that I’m not giving it an 8, Lady in the water gets a gerrod.com rating of 6/10.

I’m surprised you gave it a 6, I really didn’t like it at all! Then again I paid to see it in the movie theatre which added to my disdain
Totally agreed with you – it wasn’t the best of his films but was something different.
Hey Gerry, any chance you could post them onto Brissy once you’re finished so we can watch them too – about 2 years before they hit OZ. Promise we’ll send them straight back
