Sadly for me, my Australian holiday is over already, whilst lucky ducky wifey gets another week and a bit! When I get back to the UK I’ll write up a “trip report” and upload some photos.
Anyway, to break up my journey home I decided that I’d stay a couple of nights in Hong Kong. My hotel room has free internet access; supposedly it’s wireless but I can’t seem to get that to work. Bless JFK Terminal 7 for teaching me to always travel with a network cable!
My flight was pretty uneventful, I secured an exit row which was great, but the dude sitting next to me was only slightly shy of “seatbelt extender” status so I had to kiss my left-hand arm-rest goodbye. Oh well, at least there was plenty of legroom (and it was only a 767 so it wasn’t even one of those exits where people mill about to stretch, bonus!). The plane entertainment system was one of the dodgy old ones with a projector so I watched movies on my laptop instead – thanks Bender!
Getting to the hotel was also fairly easy – I got the airtrain to Kowloon station, and then they provide a free shuttle bus to other parts of the city. According to trip advisor my hotel is “directly above Jordan station”; well, that’s not actually true, it’s a little bit down the road so that threw me somewhat. It also didn’t help that the bus driver parked two streets away from the MTR station and told me that it was my stop! So I walked around a little bit with my both my backpacks (in the rain what’s more!) before finding the hotel, but it all turned out OK in the end.
My impression so far of HK is that it’s like the Asian version of NY. Wide streets, bustling activity, lots of neon and skyscrapers, and taxis everywhere honking impatiently. I got a rice and chicken type of take away meal for dinner, which came to all of about $6 or £2 so I’m guessing that eating here will be a delight to the wallet.
I am meeting up with John tomorrow at 10AM. John is a HK native who lived with us in Australia as an exchange student when I was about 12 years old! We are going shopping, then to have lunch with his brother Quentin, then to meet Crystal and Rebecca (wife and daughter) before dinner. It should be a good way to spend the day!
Anyway, have to do a bit more research before turning in to bed. Jason tells me that camera lenses are cheap over here so I need to work out how much I’m likely to save before I shell out for one.
