The Capital Ring: not just a walk in the park

The Capital Ring is a strategic walking circuit through London’s parks and wilderness and on Saturday Stacey and I ventured out to see what it’s all about!

The walk is around 125km long and divided into manageable chunks. We checked out Walk 6 from Wimbledon Park to Richmond, even passing the spot where Elisabeth Beresford sat to write The Wombles of Wimbledon Common. Impressive huh? Not really. I’ve no idea who EB or The Wombles are, which led Stacey to proclaim loudly: “Kristy, where’s your kid brain?!”

The walk was very pleasant, despite the mud. Aaah, the mud. While locals strode by in their sensible wellingtons, I pussyfooted about in sneakers. I wanted something comfortable since we were walking more than 11kms but forgot that my sneakers have a maze of air holes on the underside to give more bounce or something. When I got home it was a maze not of air but of mud, grass and stones that took forever to remove (with the aid of kebab skewers).

It’s a good thing that all that fresh air and scenery was worth the effort!

Sounds like a great healthy Saturday afternoon activity! I’m not sure I had heard of The Wombles either until someone was talking to me about Wimbledon Common. Btw, I wonder what makes a walking circuit ‘strategic’ Mr Wikipedia?!

KJ, I notice that you and I both chose to update the blogs while the boys were away. We must have felt a sense of responsibility!

Definitely a sense of responsibility! There’d be trouble if he came home and there’d been no updates!

I think it the word ‘strategic’ could probably be replaced with ‘official’ or something… There are markers all along the route, and books on it etc.

I just looked up askoxford and strategic can refer to a weapon for use against industrial areas… maybe the Ring is planned to keep industrial development at bay? Too much of a stretch?

Or perhaps it was strategically designed (it does go through most of London’s borough and green spaces – that must have taken some strategy).
