Iron chef: BBQ

It seems a waste to have two BBQs in the backyard without putting them both to use at the same time at least once. As such, we had Brad and Jackie, and Shaun and Robyn over yesterday for the first ever Iron Chef: BBQ. It was the classic showdown of the braai vs. the barbie, with the only guarantee being that we’d all be eating a lot of tasty food.

Team RSA

On the menu for Team Australia was Lamb kebabs, Prawns with Lemon and Garlic, an italian salad, and a potato salad (specifically, my Mom’s potato salad).

The South Africans whipped up a classic menu of boerewors (pronounced “BORA-vorse”, and not “Boar wars” as I learned), lamb steaks with a minty, mustard sauce, and barbequed corn on the cob. And, all served along a side of coleslaw, and Robyn’s “home made” garden salad.

Yes, it really was a tasting sensation, and needless to say we were rather stuffed by the time we’d attempted (and failed) to polish it all off. We managed to burn off a few calories with a number of rounds of croquet, with each course (and subsequent hits) become more and more daring as the recycling bin became more and more filled with empty beer bottles.

Dessert consisted of one of Shelley’s pecan pies, and a bottle of Amarula that Brad and Jackie had kindly brought along. It was such a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon, and I’m truly looking forward to Iron Chef: BBQ round two!

(As an aside: here’s what happens when animals eat marula fruit… heh heh heh)

We went to Scott’s brother’s place yesterday and had a potjie. It was awesome! Also had Amarula and Koeksisters and Biltong. Mmmm…yummy!

Those prawns look delicious! I could eat them all over again.

So jealous! BBQ and braai all in the same meal, yumbo! Was there an iron chef winner?

We didn’t have an impartial third party to judge, so in a way, we were all winners…
