Buckingham Palace

I’ve always thought the queen was one classy bird, so it’s only fitting that she has quite a classy nest to live in. Since she spends all of September in her summer house somewhere (or so I’m led to believe), she lets the common folk like us take a tour of her pad in her absence. We wanted to do this last year and never got around to it, so we jumped at the chance to sus it this year.

Unfortunately, she’s not quite sharing enough to allow you to take photos on the inside. Shame really – it really would make for some nice shots! She has multiple art galleries, loads of sitting rooms (there was more formal names for them but lets be honest, that’s what they were), and the biggest dining room I’ve ever seen.

Speaking of the dining room, they had it set up for a state dinner, and it was mighty impressive how everything on the table sat in perfect lines. I wondered what their secret technique for doing this was, until I saw the video of the preparations – they simply hold different lengths of wood against the edge of the table, and then line up the items with the correct piece of wood. Genius!

Palace from the back

The only place that Queenie does allow you to take piccies from is out the back. As you can see, it’s rather large for a house, and the backyard is really something else – but despite all her riches, the lake, and the forest walk, the one thing she definitely doesn’t have is a hills hoist. I guess money doesn’t buy you everything after all!

The pic doesn’t show that the Palace is a big four-sided affair built around a quadrangle. This is the only side that was open to the public and it holds the State rooms (which we saw) on the ground floor and visitors accommodation above. One wing is offices, one wing is building staff/management (I think) and the final one is Queenie’s private rooms. Would love to have a peek in there!

My fave part of the tour was the secret passages from the kitchen to the dining room alcove, and another one into one of the guest sitting rooms.

[...] and all, but I have trouble differentiating one palace from the next one (with the exception of Buckinghuge Palace, that place was niiiiiiccccccceeeeeeeeee…..). They’re all very opulent with fancy pants [...]
