Two pounds fifty

We had to go shopping for groceries yesterday. Not content to have an ordinary shopping trip (who ever is?), I set the house a challange! The rules were pretty simple – everyone had to buy something for at least £2.00, but no more than £2.50. And, it had to be something mysterious – no influencing other people’s choices!

So, here’s what we came up with:

Two pounds fifty

But the question is – who bought what? In fact – it’s a competition! The first person who correctly names, (a) which person bought which item, and (b) who went over-budget (> £2.50), who went under-budget (< £2.00), and who spent exactly the £2.50 (two of us), will win a prize!

To help out, here’s a description of what the items were, clockwise from the top-left:

  • Millionaire caramel slice, and cinnamon and chocolate men
  • Raspberry jelly crystals, and a giant jar of salted peanuts
  • Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge brownie mix, and a four pack of caramel wafer biscuits
  • Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough ice cream, and a Mars Duo bar

    Hmmm….

J – the smiley bikkies 6 white, 6 chocolate and the 6 others with the chocolate bits on the top. Total 18 pieces – not divisible by four so to make up he came in exactly on budget.

S – the Ben and Jerry’s and the Mars Bar and overbudget – hang the expense, besides it’ll offset Jule’s saving. She’ll have her chocolate fix by accidentally eating both the Mars Bar bits while the others are trying to figure out how to split the icecream equitably.

K – Searched high and low to find a plate of Brownies, bought the mix to save a few pennies but couldn’t stand being shy of the budget. Then could only find the caramel cigarettes to fill out the balance of the budget. 4 Caramel bits and 4 large brownies means one of each, each, and the budget is intact. Although to be fair, the cost of running the oven while baking should be added to the total.

G – The Peanuts, because really he’s a Rasperry Jelly kind of guy and didn’t want the world to know. Sort of like buying toothpaste at a chemist shop in a vain attempt to disguise the actual purpose of the visit.
    ;-)

Fortunately the peanuts were slow moving stock, so he managed to have the price reduced to total exactly the budget. He will despair when he finds that there are 227 peanuts in the jar, so the last three will have to be divided into quarters and shared.

    ……
    and that’s without any clues….

    Cheers,

    P

yum yum yum. sprinkle the jelly crystals on the icecream and use the caramel wafers, mars bars&man biscuits to scoop it into your mouths, bake the brownies and while they’re still warm top them with the millionaire’s slice. chuck those half-healthy peanuts out. or save them for the beers later, wish I was there to share!
