Camden Markets

Making the most of the beautiful weather last weekend, we joined Julian and Shelley for a trip to Camden Markets to meet up with Jules’s cousin John. Well, that was their reason for going; we simply hadn’t been before and decided that perhaps it would be worth our while.

And worth our while it was! I was extremely impressed by the eclecticity of the place – yes, I did make that word up, but I feel as though “eclectic” is the only real way to describe the place. Well, that, and “busy”; by about 11 AM the place was absolutely heaving with an eclectic gaggle of punks, shopping at eclectic stores for eclectic goods sold by eclectic merchants.

Most impressive of all (at least to me and my stomach) was the variety of food available. There was one stall which sold only orange juice, 100% freshly squeezed, and it was good; amazingly sweet, and super refreshing!

Camden is built right next to a series of locks, which, via a network of canals, connects London to many far-off places in the UK – the furthest I remember being Liverpool, which is something like 360 miles away!

We joined a bunch of other tourists for a short canal ride from Camden to Little Venice – a round trip of about an hour-and-a-half. It was quite an interesting little journey, though I suspect not as impressive as “Big Venice” in Italy, which we are yet to visit.

I grabbed another orange juice on our way back to Putney, extremely happy with our first Camden Markets experience. I’ll definitely go back with a bigger appetite next time; the Jamaican stall in particular looked goooooood…

seems like you are getting to know the whereabouts of Jamaican eating options around London – very useful for when you have that craving. I’ve never been, how does it compare to Notting Hill or Spitafields?

Must admit I haven’t been to either of those Matt! But I much preferred it to Portobello Road, and even to Borough Markets which I quite like! The only bad part really, is the crowds – it was *packed*!

Pat says that if you go during the week, that’s much less of a problem!
