“Baby Piccolo” – now “Oscar Gerrod Thomas” – arrived yesterday (23rd of September) at 15:56 Brisbane time, tipping the scales at 3460g (around 7lb 10oz).
Kristy had a text-book start to her labour, when her waters broke at 10:50PM, bang on her due date (the 21st). We had a couple of appointments at the hospital over the next couple of days, before we were admitted to our the birth centre around 1:30 AM on the morning of the 23rd.
Kristy laboured brilliantly, breathing through the contractions and generally taking everything in her stride. We had an awesome midwife with us all night, who kept our spirits up and filled us with confidence. Unfortunately though, after about 8AM, contractions started slowing down, despite our best efforts to keep them going (both naturally, and eventually via an oxytocin drip). So sadly, at around 3PM, the doctor’s official recommendation was for a c-section, due to Piccolo’s “failure to progress”. After weighing up our options, with both of us being tired and stressed, we agreed.
It certainly wasn’t the way we wanted the labour to end, but our spirits were lifted knowing that we’d soon be getting baby cuddles – and we’d be finding out if we were having a boy or a girl! I was a bit nervous going in to theatre, but we were both all smiles when the doctor lowered the curtain and held the baby up for us!
And there he was! Our little boy!
Since the operation, everything has been great! The staff caring for Kristy and Oscar have been wonderful – very helpful and friendly. Both of them are doing really well, and Kristy is recovering from her surgery brilliantly.
At this stage, they’re checked in to hospital until Tuesday, but I’m hoping they can come home before that. Fingers crossed! Visitors are very welcome (hours are 10AM – 1PM, then 3PM – 8PM) – but please give me a call first so we can make sure the room isn’t too full!

Welcome to the world, Oscar! It was so very lovely to finally meet you today and to hold you for so very long while you slept. xxx
Awesome Oscar Gerrod!
Well done to all three of you, we are probably not as thrilled as you are, but we are thrilled none the less!
On second thoughts we are just as thrilled as you are! Another baby to visit when we get back… woo hoo!
He’s so sweet! I want to hold him. Stupid distance.
Congratulations Gerrod and Kristy. Oscar looks perfect. We would love to come and visit the three of you when you get home and feel settled. Our love to you all,
Cath, Grant, Amelie and Alex xxxx
Firstly, welcome back home.
Secondly, Congratulations from us 3 on your new baby boy! Love the name ‘Oscar’, and he looks very content and simply gorgeous – and pictures of Kristy looking relaxed and smiling – great pickies Gerrod. Welcome to parenthood. You’ll never look back.

Ps: Hope your kitchen’s all finished, or nearly there for Kristy and Oscar to come home to. Take it easy after that Ceaser to Kristy. Lucky he’s not as heavy as Coop was to carry around whilst your still recovering (Coop was 4975g).
Congratulations on recovering that awesome geocache you hid so many months ago.
He looks like a great little fella. You can take a rest now Gerrod, it’s hard work watching your wife give birth.
A tip: Stay away from formula if you can…formula poo really is the worst
PS
Obviously, he will now rejoice in the nickname “Whiz”.
Congratulations both of you. Kristy can I give you massive high five for wanting to labour naturally and without drugs – I really wish more women would do this. I wanted with both of ours, but circumstances dictated otherwise and I opted for an epidural for natural delivery of both. I’m really impressed with your laid back approach, which is something I didn’t do and now regret. Little people rock and they incredibly funny as they learn to do all sorts of things.
