It’s funny how random people can’t help but comment when they see you holding a baby. Not that I mind, though it’s surprising how often you hear the exact same thing. The three comments that I’ve heard the most from randoms while out and about with Oscar are:
- Say farewell to sleep, because you won’t be doing that anymore! – So far, we’ haven’t really found this to be the case. Kristy is getting up twice most nights (occasionally more, occasionally less) so Oscar can feed, and I’m usually up once or twice to help change or burp him, or whatever else may be required. Kristy definitely appreciates a good nap during the day (even more-so than she used to) but generally (or so far at least) I think the “lack of sleep” thing is terribly overstated. Maybe we’re just lucky, or maybe we’re really glad we invested in an awesome mattress – but either way, we’re still smiling.
- Everything is going to change now / Life is never going to be the same! – I don’t know why people bother saying this; or moreover, I don’t know anyone that would assume that your life wouldn’t change after you have kids.
- You forget how small they are! – This is the one we hear most frequently, and though we both kind of roll our eyes and nod along, it’s the only one that I think is worth paying any attention to. I’m trying to be conscious every day to see if he’s growing, if he feels heavier, if he has any new moves, etc. because I know that in a few years time, we will have forgotten how tiny he was, especially in these first few weeks.
Good thing we’re taking a photo or two every now and then to help remind us.

That’s a brilliant photo. But I just want to tell you one thing: everything in your life is going to change now.
[...] Oscar was born, the phrase we heard most often (and hence got most sick of) was that “You forget how small they are”; yet oddly enough, that’s the only thing I could think of when we met Natalie. She’s so [...]
