Laying low

All of our recent sickness has left us feeling rather quiet and homebodyish – if that’s a word – so there’s not much that’s newsworthy this week.

I got a remedial massage on Wednesday to help relieve the tension in my neck (as I suspect that’s the cause of my migraines). It certainly helped, and the massage therapist has recommended I come back weekly – for a few weeks at least – until the knots in my shoulders have gone. Thank goodness for private health cover, which means I’m only left $19 out of pocket!

Tonight, we made a delicious Tom Yum soup for dinner, using some fresh lemongrass from our garden. It’s the first time we’ve cooked with our own lemongrass, so I’m not sure if we “prepared” it correctly, but my-oh-my is it hard to rip out of the ground! And it’s so wasteful, too – well, that’s probably not the right word – but look how tall it is to start with – and then you only use the bottom 30 cm or so!

Good thing it’s organic – straight onto the compost heap!

  4. There is actually a trick to picking lemongrass; my Mother ALWAYS had some growing and used it often in her indonesian dishes. Select a stalk and give it a twist till the thing comes clear of the whole bunch. You should take out a few roots with it. And you’re right, most of the stalk is wasted but who cares when your’s so obviously is going wild. Seems like yours has seeded… not good to allow that.
