Espresso machine upgrade

Dear Miss Silvia is now over six years old, and though she’s still kicking along strongly, we felt it was time for yet another upgrade. Though I maintain that a Silvia is one of the best machines you can buy for under $1,000 – it really has one major drawback, and that’s that it could no longer satisfy my thirst to upsize to a larger espresso machine. So with this in mind, we did indeed upsize, to an ECM Technika IV Profi. We picked it up on Friday and immediately installed it on our kitchen bench, in prime position overlooking the back deck (and the “coffee window” as Oscar calls it).

A machine that shiny will surely make a good espresso, right? Right? Well – in this case, the answer is a resounding “yes”, though I must admit I’m still getting used to it. Thankfully, our dear friends and all round coffee experts – Durhams – came around on Sunday night to offer me some pointers. Anyway – if Miss Silvia saw us through for over six years, surely the yet-to-be-named ECM will last us at least twelve? Truth be told, I suspect so long as it keeps pumping out decent espresso, we’ll be in no hurry to upgrade. I am, however, considering roasting my own coffee beans at home, in order to satisfy the weekly problem we seem to have of running out of coffee beans. Anyone have some tips on a good starter machine for a budding backyard coffee roaster?

    Why not just cut out the middlemen completely and get yourself a coffee bean plantation going in the back yard? Think of the quantity of cappachino youre missing out on because you dont have a regular supply.
