Last night I was lucky enough to go to the Gomez concert with Suz, Al, Geoff, and Eva. The last time we saw Gomez was at Splendour in the Grass 2 years ago, and they were totally rockin’ – so naturally they had large expectations to live up to.
The evening didn’t start very well, as we had to queue outside for over an hour, whilst Eva and I were busting to go to the loo. Doors to The Tivoli were supposed to open at 7pm, but due to a hold up with the instruments at Sydney Airport, we didn’t actually get inside until about 8:15pm. Ahhh sweet release – now I know what Live were talking about…
Anyway – we headed upstairs, and it wasn’t long before support act Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson came on. Not a well chosen support act if you ask me, as he was nothing but depressing. After droning on for about 45 minutes, he left the stage to a mediocre applause.
Finally, Gomez came on. They played a killer set, with heaps of songs from their new album, as well as many favourites from their previous ones. My pick of the night was “Detroit Swing 66″, as it really showcases what a tight act the 6 musicians are. Gomez has 3 different guys who share the singing, and each one has a very unique voice. Also, they have an amazing sense of rhythm and very intricate timing, which is what makes them such an interesting band. Totally rockin’ music! My only complaints were that they weren’t very big on conversation, and everything was way too loud (though it could just be that I’m getting old).
All of the Gomez albums will be on today’s playlist, so I can relive all the best moments from last night.
